CULTURE SHOCK

This video is about cross-cultural adaptation and culture shock. Foreign students share their perceptions of their experiences in the U.S. as each of them (plus one specialist in cross-cultural relations and a few American Students) is interviewed about living and studying in a new culture. The focus is on the arrival and immediate postarrival period and the culture shock which, for most of the interviewees, follows on its heels. It becomes clear that central to the problems encountered are major differences in values and behaviors between the foreign students and the Americans they meet. The documentary covers a range of basic characteristics of American culture: openness/directness, privacy, attitudes toward time, friendship patterns, informality, and competitiveness. Culture Shock is an excellent resource for any program wishing to help its participants better understand the cross-cultural adjustment process and the experience of being a foreigner in the United States. CASINO ROYAL ... a new Bond

With a new Bond, a new series direction and a classic Ian Fleming novel as the backbone, Casino Royale stormed into theatres worldwide surrounded by controversy. Critics and Bond fans alike lamented the casting of Daniel Craig and panned the idea of a “Bond Begins” type film. Message boards were abuzz, anti-Craig Web sites were created and it seemed everyone was ready to declare Bond dead. However, after the film's release most every critic was silenced (including this one) and the movie is now regarded as brilliant and a cornerstone of the franchise. From the moment the gritty, violent and black and white pre-title sequence begins, the audience can sense that they are in for something new and exciting. The wisecracking portrayals of Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan have been replaced by a ruthless killer; a man capable of brutally murdering an informant in a bathroom before coldly dispatching an MI6 employee turncoat. Essentially, after a mere five minutes the audience knows that th

What's Second Life?

Second Life (SL) is an online virtual world developed by Linden Lab which was launched on June 23, 2003. A number of free client programs called Viewers enable Second Life users, called Residents, to interact with each other through avatars. Residents can explore the world, (known as the grid) meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another. Second Life is intended for people aged 13 and over,[3] and as of 2011 has more than 20 million registered user accounts. Built into the software is a three-dimensional modeling tool based around simple geometric shapes that allows residents to build virtual objects. There is also an object oriented scripting language Linden Scripting Language which can be used to add interactivity to objects. More complex three-dimensional sculpted prims (colloquially known as sculpties), textures for clothing or other objects, and animations and gestures can be cr

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater House

In 1935, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a country house for the Kaufmann family over a small stream in Western Pennsylvania. He named it Fallingwater. It, perhaps more than any other building, exemplifies Wright's concept of 'Organic Architecture,' which seeks to harmonize people and nature by integrating the building, the site, and its inhabitants into a unified whole. And today, the iconic image of the house over the waterfall, remains a testament to a great architect working at the height of his career. Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water is heralded as one of the greatest homes in America. The Early Show goes behind closed doors with an intimate look at this living museum. Russ Mitchell reports. Inside the house, truly impressive.

Santiago Calatrava: finding architecture's soul

The renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has been speaking to euronews. His designs - which take their inspiration from nature - provoke strong reactions; they are either loved or loathed. Calatrava, who considers himself to be above all an artist, says an architect is also a philanthropist. In the past cities were designed to last, today they provide an insight into the soul of the lost civilisations that built them. So, if architecture is the most tangible sign of a civilisation how then to preserve the sacred nature of a location?

THE WRITER by Ellie Goulding

Lyrics: You wait for a silence, I wait for a word Lie next to your frame, girl unobserved You change your position and you are changing me Casting these shadows where they shouldn't be We're interrupted by the heat of the sun Trying to prevent what's already begun You're just a body, I can smell your skin And when I feel it, you're wearing thin But I've got a plan Why don't you be the artist And make me out of clay Why don't you be the writer And decide the words I say 'Cause I'd rather pretend I'll still be there at the end Only it's too hard to ask Won't you try to help me Sat on your sofa, it's all broken springs This isn't the place for those violin strings I try out a smile and I aim it at you You must have missed it, you always do But I've got a plan Why don't you be the artist And make me out of clay Why don't you be the writer And decide the words I say 'Cause I'd rather pretend I'll still be th
