FLYING CAR!... I WANT TO DRIVE IT

Ever think that flying cars would only exist in the pages and images of science fiction? Join us at the New York Auto Show for an exclusive peak at the AirCar, Milner Motors latest attempt towards making flying cars a reality. The current vehicle is a non-flying but drive-able prototype of the AirCar. In ground mode, the Milner AirCar will operate as an automobile and be about the same size as the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. A separate 40hp engine and transmission will power the wheels on the ground. Teh company expects the vehicle to cost approximately $450,000. The initial prototype will be built as an experimental aircraft, with the eventual goal of getting the aircraft certified for commercial production. The airplane will be eventually be pressurized, have normal deicing equipment and operate up to 25,000 feet. This allows the pilot to get above a majority of the weather without getting into the more hostile airspace above 25,000 feet (of lower temperatures, lower atmospheric p...

TELEPORTATION ... IS IT REAL?

Michio Kaku , physicist and author of "Physics of the Impossible," says it is already a reality. Ever since the wheel was invented more than 5,000 years ago, people have been inventing new ways to travel faster from one point to another. The chariot, bicycle, automobile, airplane and rocket have all been invented to decrease the amount of time we spend getting to our desired destinations. Yet each of these forms of transportation share the same flaw: They require us to cross a physical distance, which can take anywhere from minutes to many hours depending on the starting and ending points. Teleportation is the transfer of matter from one point to another, more or less instantaneously. Teleportation involves dematerializing an object at one point, and sending the details of that object's precise atomic configuration to another location, where it will be reconstructed. What this means is that time and space could be eliminated from travel -- we could be transported to any l...

MAGLEV train capable of 3,500 km/h

Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation), is a system of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles, predominantly trains, using magnetic levitation from a very large number of magnets for lift and propulsion. This method has the potential to be faster, quieter and smoother than wheeled mass transit systems. The power needed for levitation is usually not a particularly large percentage of the overall consumption; most of the power used is needed to overcome air drag, as with any other high speed train. The highest recorded speed of a Maglev train is 581 kilometres per hour (361 mph), achieved in Japan in 2003, 6 kilometres per hour (3.7 mph) faster than the conventional TGV speed record.

WHAT ABOUT ROAD VEHICLES? ... MAYBE HYDROGEN FUEL CAR WILL BE THE CAR OF THE FUTURE

This is an interview with a General Motors employee about their fuel cell car. Many experts think hydrogen could replace petrol, diesel and natural gas as the main fuel for cars, buses and trucks in the years to come.

THE ULTRA

ULTra is a battery-driven, 200-mpg-equivalent, elevated personal rapid transit system with many four-person vehicles. First deployment is scheduled for London Heathrow Airport in Spring 2010, to serve Heathrow's new Terminal 5. Working as circulator transit for airports, office parks, universities, and other major activity centers, ULTra is faster than a car. In these applications, ULTra solves the "last mile problem." ABOUT CHAMOMILE: AN HERBAL REMEDY

There are two reasons why people drink chamomile tea aside from its flavor. Mark Blumenthal, founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council, says people also drink chamomile tea to soothe their stomachs, and it has been shown to be a very mild, safe, effective sleep aid. Modern clinical research suggests also shows chamomile extracts can help treat certain skin wounds and other kinds of skin problems, making it an herb that everybody would want to have in their kitchen.

HYPNOTHERAPY

What is hypnotherapy? The term "hypnosis" comes from the Greek word hypnos, meaning "sleep." Hypnotherapists use exercises that bring about deep relaxation and an altered state of consciousness, also known as a trance. A person in a deeply focused state is unusually responsive to an idea or image, but this does not mean that a hypnotist can control the person's mind and free will. On the contrary, hypnosis can actually teach people how to master their own states of awareness. By doing so they can affect their own bodily functions and psychological responses. What illnesses or conditions respond well to hypnosis? Hypnosis is used in a variety of settings -- from emergency rooms to dental offices to outpatient clinics. Clinical studies suggest that hypnosis may improve immune function, increase relaxation, decrease stress, and ease pain and feelings of anxiety. Hypnotherapy can reduce the fear and anxiety that some people feel before medical or dental procedures. ...

ASPIRIN CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE IF YOU ARE HAVING A HEART ATTACK

Dr. Owen R. Thompson explains what you need to do when someone is having a heart attack. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Heart attack and stroke are life-and-death emergencies — every second counts. If you see or have any of the listed symptoms, immediately call 112 or your emergency response number. Not all these signs occur in every heart attack or stroke. Sometimes they go away and return. If some occur, get help fast! Today heart attack and stroke victims can benefit from new medications and treatments unavailable to patients in years past. For example, clot-busting drugs can stop some heart attacks and strokes in progress, reducing disability and saving lives. But to be effective, these drugs must be given relatively qu...

THE WORLD'S FIRST FACE TRANSPLANT

Isabelle Dinoire, born 1967, was the first person to undergo a partial face transplant, after her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. Prior to the operation, she could barely eat or speak, but after the operation, she can do both. Dinoire's dog "chewed her face after she passed out from an overdose of sleeping pills." Some reports following the initial surgery claim that her daughter said that the black Labrador cross (named Tania) was "frantically" trying to wake Dinoire after she took sleeping pills in a suicide attempt, and Dinoire wrote about her suicidal feelings in her own memoir. Dinoire's injuries affected her nose, lips, chin, and cheeks. She wore a surgical mask to cover the injuries on the lower part of her face, as the upper face was not affected. Doctors and the media debated whether the donor and/or the recipient had attempted suicide, with reports stating that the donor had hanged herself. The Sunday Times, a British newspaper, stated that Di...

POPE APPROVES USE OF CONDOMS IN FIGHT AGAINST AIDS

The move by Pope Benedict is particularly surprising because he caused controversy last year by suggesting condom use could actually worsen the problem of Aids in Africa. He described the epidemic in the continent as "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems". See next video about his comments last year. After decades of fierce opposition to the use of all contraception, the pontiff will end the Catholic Church's absolute ban on the use of condoms. He will say that it is acceptable to use a prophylactic when the sole intention is to "reduce the risk of infection" from Aids. While he will restate the Catholic Church's staunch objections to contraception because it believes it interferes with the creation of life, he will argue that using a condom to preserve life and avoid death can be a responsible act – even outside marriage. Asked whether "the Cath...

HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY By Kenneth Beare, About.com Guide

There are many ways to write an essay. However, the standard essay form follows the same basic patterns as discussed in this 'how to'. 1.Select the topic of your essay. 2.Choose the central idea, or thesis, of your essay. For example: Information technology has revolutionized the way we work. 3.Outline your essay into introductory, body and summary paragraphs. 4.The introductory paragraph begins with an interesting sentence. For example: Home workers have grown from 150,000 to over 12 million in the past 5 years thanks to the wonders of the computer. 5.After this first sentence, add your thesis statement from above. 6.Use one sentence to introduce every body paragraph to follow. For example: The Internet has made this possible by extending the office into the home. 7.Finish the introductory paragraph with a short summary or goal statement. For example: Technological innovation has thus made the traditional workplace obsolete. 8.In each of the body paragraphs (usually two or thr...

WHAT`S GLOBAL WARMING?

"Global warming could do more than just melt polar ice. It could change our maps, and displace people from cities and tropical islands." Nowadays there are different points of view about this matter. What do you think about?. Does climate change really exist or is it pure invention?.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE by Sir David Attenborough

The legendary broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough was long unsure about the causes of the observed climate warming. In his documentary, The Truth About Climate Change, he sheds doubt and explains what convinced him. Climate models based on purely natural processes such as solar activity and volcanic eruptions fail to explain the observed change in Earth's climate in the latter part of the 20th century. Models factoring in the human impact, that is, the increase of carbon dioxide in the athmosphere, depict the transpired warming accurately, however.

WIND POWER TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE

Not a single day goes by without mention of the environmental and climate challenges facing the world. The ice caps are melting right before our eyes and the oceans are rising as we quest for answers and durable solutions to the worlds growing energy needs. Wind is one of Denmarks most abundant natural energy sources, today accounting for one-fifth of the electricity supplied through Danish outlets. In just under 30 years, Denmark has become world champ when it comes to harnessing the otherwise tough-to-control wind energy in the power system. But how? This is precisely what this film wants to clarify.

YELLOWSTONE SUPER VOLCANO

What is a super volcano? A super volcano is the most destructive force on this planet. Only a few exist in the world and when they erupt they do so with a force tens of thousands of times greater than other eruptions. They lie dormant for hundreds of thousands of years as a vast reservoir of magma builds up inside them before finally they unleash their apocalyptic force, capable of obliterating continents. They threaten the survival of mankind. What happened during the last eruption of a super volcano? The last eruption of a super volcano was in Toba, Sumatra, 75,000 years ago. It had 10,000 times the explosive force of Mount St. Helens and changed life on Earth forever. Thousands of cubic kilometres of ash was thrown into the atmosphere - so much that it blocked out light from the sun all over the world. 2,500 miles away 35 centimetres of ash coated the ground. Global temperatures plummeted by 21 degrees. The rain would have been so poisoned by the gasses that it would have turned bla...

GLOBAL WARMING AND POLAR BEARS

There are an estimated 20,000 Polar Bears in the wild and they depend upon the arctic weather for their livelihood. Today, there are many accounts of Polar Bear, global warming deaths attributed to drowning. The Polar Bear is doomed if something isn’t done to reverse the dangers of global warming. Polar Bears depend upon the natural habitat of the Arctic, however global warming has contributed to the growing loss of Arctic Ice. In fact, polar bears have been photographed clinging to tiny ice formations as their natural environment simply melts away, leaving them at the mercy of a climate that they cannot survive in.

LOCAL ENVIRONMENT

The phrase 'local environment' will have a different meaning for everybody – some people will think of their street, others will think of their wider neighbourhood, their local park and where they spend their leisure time, their local shops, or even the area around where they work. Even though these differences exist, one thing never changes: no-one can avoid interacting with their local environment. The quality of the local environment has the same impact on everybody, regardless of their background, social group, affluence, or age. In particular, the quality of the local environment affects… •what makes somewhere a good place to live or visit •the satisfaction of communities with their local area •property prices •what makes somewhere a good place for businesses to invest •the potential success of regeneration schemes •the quality of the environment also affects how residents see their local council’s overall performance Perhaps most importantly, the local environment also ha...

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE LAWYERS?!

The Deaf Bookkeeper (by Yolanda González) A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Enzo, has cheated him out of 10 million bucks. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Enzo would hear nothing that he might have to testify about in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Enzo about his missing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer who knows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the 10 million bucks are, that he embezzled from me." The lawyer, using sign language, asks Enzo where the money is. Enzo signs back, "I don't know what you are talking about." The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn't know what you are talking about." The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Enzo's temple and says, "Ask him again!" The lawyer signs to Enzo, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him." Enzo signs back, "OK. You win! Th...

"YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND" by Deborah Tannen

Sex, Lies and Conversation; Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other? by Deborah Tannen The Washington Post, June 24, 1990 "I WAS ADDRESSING a small gathering in a suburban Virginia living room -- a women's group that had invited men to join them. Throughout the evening, one man had been particularly talkative, frequently offering ideas and anecdotes, while his wife sat silently beside him on the couch. Toward the end of the evening, I commented that women frequently complain that their husbands don't talk to them. This man quickly concurred. He gestured toward his wife and said, "She's the talker in our family." The room burst into laughter; the man looked puzzled and hurt. "It's true," he explained. "When I come home from work I have nothing to say. If she didn't keep the conversation going, we'd spend the whole evening in silence." This episode crystallizes the irony that although American men tend to talk m...

COMMUNICATION by Spandau Ballet

Spandau Ballet is a British band formed in London in the late 1970s. Initially inspired by the New Romantic fashion, their music has featured a mixture of funk, jazz, soul and synthpop. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, achieving ten Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1980 and 1990. The band split acrimoniously in 1990 but announced their reunion in March 2009, complete with a tour that began in October 2009. Spandau Ballet Lyrics: " Communication " Communication always leaves me incomplete, The grass is greener, but it's grown beneath my feet... Love inspiration is a message on a wing, But I have left it in the words you'll never sing... Communication let me down, And I'm left here Communication let me down, And I'm left here, I'm left here again! Telex or tell me, but it's always second-hand, I'm incognito but no rendezvous's been planned... Dictate or relay, I could send it to your home, "Re...
